Hi and welcome to this new series of blogs in which we will be getting to know our designers that bit better. The first designer we are interviewing is Angie from Ultra Tee. Ultra Tee are an award winning ecologically minded company whose collection of t-shirts in particular prove really popular.
Angie, thanks for agreeing to be interviewed, would you mind giving us a quick insight into your journey so far?
The last three months were really busy after two great and successful trade shows in London: Scoop International & Pure London. It is a big pleasure and satisfaction for Ultra Tee to get such a great feedback and curiosity from professionals! So exciting to meet those people to hear their opinions and get some precious advice! Lots of interesting contacts, and upcoming exciting projects! By the way, Ultra Tee has now kids range so parents could “match” their tees with kid’s ones: same prints but in smaller version. It is really popular!
That sounds great, I am thinking of bringing in a childrens range so will ask you more about that! One of the main reasons I wanted to include you on Ethically Clothed was your focus on the ecological element of your production. Why is it that this is so important to you?
More and more people nowadays are becoming conscious about the importance of sustainability and any little action everyday could help in some way to let our planet become better. That’s why I was thinking: why not to start from everyday essentials like cotton tees & sweat-shirts that all of us wearing all the time? I would like to show to the younger generation that to be fancy and eco-responsible is possible by wearing organic/ethical cotton tees with eco-friendly prints on it. This a small step towards better shopping and a better planet.
You have certainly managed that; the style of your clothing gets commented on a lot. As a company based in both London and Paris, how do you find the approach to ethical fashion varies in the two cities if at all?
Statistically, independently of cities/countries, most clients are interested on visual aspect of clothes, then they check its quality and only thirdly do they check for an “additional value” that could be important; for instance, the sustainable aspect in my case. I would love it if one day the “third aspect” becomes the first aspect checked while shopping as it is really important to understand that our planet needs to be respected as well. However, after two trade shows in London this season, I must say that UK buyers are more curious and more open for sustainability. It is really motivating and encouraging for the future!
That is really insightful, thank you for that! When you are approached at these trade shows how do you describe the company? In fact how would you describe your clothing in a single tweet?
Everyday eco-conscious essentials with beautiful prints inspired be nature.
That is a great summary and sounds like you have honed it following many conversations. Using that experience, what do you think is the easiest change most companies could make to be more ethical?
Producing/sourcing sustainable fabrics
Precise I like it! Thank you very much for your time today Angie, would you mind finishing of by letting us know what the next step is for ULTRA TEE?
More trade shows, pop-ups and maybe even a small permanent shop with other invited ethical brands ! Why not?
Why not indeed! It has been a real pleasure speaking with you and getting know know a bit more about you.
